Intimacy & Creativity

Intimacy within creativity is such a beautiful thing to see isn’t it? Have you ever gazed upon an artwork and breathed a sigh of relief, shed a tear or laughed out loud? I believe that these reactions and connections between viewer and artist occurs when honesty and vulnerability is expressed. Over the years it was difficult for me to say what I really wanted, but I am rediscovering what it means to be courageous with what I value now. Hands down I am wired to share my heart through imagery. As a woman who happens to create artwork, I have opportunity to edit, expose and shape what has been stirring in the heart. I can release it in my own time frame and go back recalling the essence of how I felt in that moment.

What often keeps us restrained and guarded with each other comes from certain factors. We can judge harshly, speak over each other, and choose to see others with distorted eyes and it is not always on purpose. I hope when you browse through the blogs and the images that you will find freedom to open up and see people and life with fresh eyes. There’s always an open invitation for greater intimacy and creativity that allows us room to listen with our heart and see with our compassion.

Art making & The Joy of Deconstruction

Have you ever observed a one year old eat? It’s scrumptiously messy and delightful to witness. The food meanders from one part of the face to the whole body. It’s the analogy I use as one of the ways art leaves a mark…literally on our lives, our studio spaces, and our bodies. I find it ironic that we are creating visual order while everything else around us looks chaotic. “I promise, the end result will be great!” That’s what we want others to realize and believe. What if I told you that deconstruction is essential to many art making processes? Check this out, as a sculptor, one has to chisel and jab away at a solid form-a sort of deductive method of creating. As a printmaker a range of techniques is used for carving out negative space to form a print. I could go on and on, but that is just a tiny taste of beauty emerging out of the messy. Sometimes, just sometimes we also need an interior deconstruction in our hearts as creative people. Going through this process allows something much greater than ourselves to emerge and in the end a breathtaking outcome.
